Becoming a PTA Member

PTA membership is open to anyone concerned about the health, education, and welfare of children and youth. Membership is available to individuals and businesses and members can show their support for public schools in their area by joining more than one local unit. Individual membership is not limited to parents of children. Grandparents, neighbors, school board members, and community members are all encouraged to join.

There are three types of PTA membership; local unit, state, and national.

Local PTA Unit
Membership at the local unit level is the most common type of membership. Local unit membership is for individuals and/or businesses that are involved in supporting the programs and activities of a local school. Memberships are available from the local PTA unit. All members of a local PTA unit are automatically members of the Iowa and National PTAs.

A portion of the dues paid for a local unit membership is sent to the Iowa PTA to help support programs and services at the state and national level. The amount paid for membership in a local PTA unit is specified in the local unit's bylaws.

To find a PTA unit in your area, call the Iowa PTA Office or go to the National PTA's website at: www.pta.org and use the box on the right to Find Your Local PTA.

Iowa PTA
Membership at the state level is common among businesses and individuals who no longer have school-aged children at home. State memberships are available from the Iowa PTA. Members of the Iowa PTA are automatically members of the National PTA and a portion of the dues paid for a state membership is sent to the National PTA to help support programs and services at the national level.

The statewide PTA in Iowa is referred to as the Neva Taylor PTA. This name was given to the statewide PTA to honor Neva Taylor, who served as a member of the Iowa PTA Board of Managers for 20 years and, then as Iowa PTA's executive secretary for 25 years.
To learn more about Neva Taylor, visit the Iowa PTA history page at:

To become a member of the Iowa PTA, download the following file and mail the completed form to the Iowa PTA Office.

National PTA
Membership at the national level allows individuals and/or businesses to support the National PTA without direct involvement in a local PTA unit. Memberships are available from the National PTA and a portion of the dues paid for a national membership is sent to the Iowa PTA to help support programs at the state level.
